Buddha

With a heavy heart we say goodbye to a member of our Daycare Crew.

Buddha’s family faced the difficult decision to help him go to Rainbow Bridge peacefully, after struggling through an extremely difficult recovery, from emergency surgery.

We will never forget this beautiful blue boy, who was a true gentle giant. Buddha was one of the Greatest Dane’s we knew, and he will truly be missed by many.

FAREWELL

Vanessa Will Be Missed

CSSP is losing our longtime employee, friend, and fellow dog lover. We are very sad to say that Vanessa will be leaving the CSSP family, but happy for her as she starts the next chapter of her life.

For the past 3 1/2 years Vanessa’s love of your pets, quirky personality, and free spirit has been a huge part of CSSP, and a blessing to our business, clients, and furry friends.

She will continue to offer her in home boarding services, with the hopes of opening her own boarding facility in the future.

Vanessa’s really enjoyed getting to know all our furry and non furry clients, and will miss everyone greatly!

ABE’S ADVICE – Going Beyond Training

Abe an American Bulldog
Abe, the American Bulldog

Be the “Alpha” in Your Home

You can get stressed out during the holidays, and your dog picks up on your stress.  Not to mention that you have moved the furniture, decorations that are unfamiliar are throughout the house and people, some familiar and some not, are coming and going.  He looks to you as a leader. Try to work for ten-minute bursts on obedience using commands that he is most familiar with.  And remember if you are calm, he is calm. So try to spend a little quiet time with him every day – it will help your stress level too.

Here are a few other tips for the holidays to help keep your pet safe.

Ornaments such as angel hair and tinsel are extremely dangerous if they are eaten, and they can cause external cuts and scrapes especially to the mouth, eyes, and nose. If you have hand made ornaments that are made of dough or popcorn, this is looked at as food by your dog and should be kept for the top of the tree where they cannot be reached.

If you put stockings on your mantle and fill them with food, your dog can probably still reach them. He’ll probably eat the stocking as well as the food. And please, don’t put gifts of food under the tree.

Holly, mistletoe, ivy, poinsettias and Christmas cactus are poisonous. Please keep them away from your dog.  The National Poison Control Center has experts to help with your concerns and questions, they are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  Their nationwide number is 800-222-1222.

Also, if something should happen and you need to go to the emergency vet, keep the phone numbers and addresses handy.  You do not want to be looking for phone numbers or addresses during an already stressful time.  I have listed 2 below for our area.

Wisconsin Veterinary Referral Center
360 Bluemound Road, Waukesha (262) 542-3241

Animal Emergency Center
2100 W. Silver Spring Drive, Glendale (414) 540-6710

We wish you a Very Happy Holiday Season.

ABE’S ADVICE – Going Beyond Training

Abe an American Bulldog
Abe, the American Bulldog

Be the “Alpha” in Your Home

I’m sure many of you have heard this phrase and know what it means, but how to apply it to everyday life as a dog owner is still difficult for some. There are simple things you can do to establish yourself as the ‘alpha.’  These are everyday behaviors you may not even look at as being important; but they are, and they lay a solid foundation in your relationship with your companion.

For example, here’s a common feeding error. Often, people feed their dog before they themselves eat. The message this sends to your dog is that s/he is the top dog because s/he eats first. You should, whenever possible, eat prior to feeding your dog. In a pack of dogs, the ‘alpha’ or more dominant dogs eat first.

Here’re another couple of behaviors to keep in mind that will help reinforce that you’re the ‘alpha.’ When coming in the house with your dog after a walk do you let your dog lead the way? You should make them wait while you enter the home first. The ‘alpha’ always leads the pack and others follow. When walking through your home, is your dog dancing around you and/or generally getting in your way? Rather than walk around your dog, walk through your dog and make them move out of your way.

All these little things can add up and help to give you that well balanced companion you so desire.

Going Beyond Training

Most people come through a training class or bring their dog to CSSP for daycare and that is the extent of the training they do with their dogs.  I know people are busy these days and it seems that the one big thing we all lack is time.  This being the case I would like to acknowledge five students that have gone above and beyond with their dogs just this past weekend.

Stefany is a Certified Vet Tech.  She works at a very busy clinic and can only attend class once every other week due to her work schedule.  She recently entered her mixed breed rescue dog, Duncan in the show at Waukesha the last weekend of July.  With her busy schedule and the challenge of working with a rescue dog, Stefany and Duncan earned their Companion Dog Title AND their Rally Novice title.

The second is Ron.  He works full time plus.  He owns three Rhodesian Ridgebacks.  He competed in Waukesha this weekend with two of his dogs, Bruno and Zorro, and earned a leg with both dogs toward their Companion Dog Title.

The third student is Natalie.  She also works full time and has three dogs, a Rottweiler, A rescue Pit Bull Terrier and a rescue American Bulldog.  Natalie and her Rescue Pit Bull Terrier Moxie earned their Rally Excellent Title in July.

The fourth and fifth students I would like to mention are Patti with Patches and Carol with Squirt.  They both, very nervously, passed their Canine Good Citizen Test this past Saturday.

Kudos to Stefany, Ron, Patti and Carol who realize it is not only important to have a well trained dog, but also important to show others what can be attained with a little hard work and perseverance.  More importantly these dogs have forever homes with their owners because they are truly obedient companion dogs!!  That is really what training is all about, keeping dogs in the home where they are loved.

CGC EVALUATIONS

Here at CSSP we believe in the Canine Good Citizen  Program. This program is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community.

The CGC Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. The program is a 10-step pass or fail test, and all dogs who pass CGC test receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club. This program provides a great foundation for training and results in a well mannered dog, that’s a joy to live with. Some dog groups require passing the CGC test as a prerequisite for therapy work, and an increasing number of apartments and condos are requiring  CGC training for resident dogs.

If you’d like more info on the CGC Test, call or talk to any of the staff. Testing is by appointment only. Dogs must be at least 1 year old, and there is a$20 fee.

ABE’S ADVICE

Abe an American Bulldog
Abe, the American Bulldog

Hot Dog!!

The summer heat will soon be upon us and our four legged friends.  Overheating and heat stroke can put our pets at risk if we don’t take precautions.  Perhaps on walks, bring your own supply of water for your friend.

Here are some things to watch for:
Keep an eye on the gums, dehydration will usually result in pale gums and tongue. Lethargy, quick panting and shortness of breath can all be symptoms of heat stroke.

If your dog is exhibiting any of these symptoms try to move to a cool shaded spot as quickly as possible.  One of the better ways to cool a dog down is to run cool water over the inner thigh and groin area. Stay cool and enjoy the summer safely!!

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING CSSP’S 2ND ANNUAL PULLING FOR PITTIES CHARITY EVENT!

We had a great turnout! Not only did we inform people on the importance of training, but we were also able to show other energy releasing outlets for dogs!

We were able to raise enough money to give 3 pit bulls free training!  Thanks to all that supported our great cause!

Hope to see you again  next year!!

NEW SERVICE OFFERED AT CSSP!

Anal glands…all dogs have em‘, yet we’re embarrassed to talk about them.

Normally dogs are able to express their glands when they poop, but sometimes if they have soft poop or have diarrhea, they may need some help. Licking their rear end, or scooting on the floor can be signs that their anal sacks are full. If they remain full, they can become impacted and rupture, and this can be very painful!

Luckily we can help!

Natalie, who also works as a Certified Vet Tech , can help your dog if you think they may need their anals expressed. She works at CSSP Wed 7-1 and Fri from 7-12., and charges $10/dog. If you have any questions please feel free to talk to her or any of the other staff at CSSP.

ABE’S ADVICE

Abe an American Bulldog
Abe, the American Bulldog

I cringe when someone visits me with a dog aggressive dog and says “I have been taking him to the dog park to try and get him socialized”. In reality you have probably just taught your dog to become a better fighter! If you own a dog with dog aggressive tendencies do him and all the other dogs a favor and find other ways to socialize with him such as a training class . Not all dogs are meant to hang out at the dog park , it doesn’t make them bad dogs, in fact many adult dogs fall into this category. Many of these dogs will however benefit from hanging out with a smaller more carefully selected group of friends , think of it more as a private club!!!

DOG WASH FUNDRAISER UPDATE!!

A HUGE THANK YOU to all who supported Ayanna’s fundraiser! The Dog Wash was a big success…we washed 37 dogs and raised $1,786.00!! Along with the additional donations we received from our CSSP family and friends, we have raised a total of $2288.00!!  That is amazing!!

I can’t begin to express how touched I am at everyone’s generosity.  Ayanna will be going to Washington, D.C.  June 25-30th!

Thank you all!!!

ABE’S ADVICE

Abe an American Bulldog

Abe, the American Bulldog

It’s tip time with Abe!
Ever find a tick in a hard to reach spot that you can’t get at with a tweezers? Here’s an easy alternative solution!

Rub a damp cotton ball on a bar of soap so it’s well coated. Place the cotton ball on top of the tick, and apply light pressure making small circles counter clockwise. The tick should come out easily, getting stuck in the cotton ball. Make sure you clean the area immediately. Don’t use this method if your dog is sensitive to soap!

Don’t forget to talk to your vet about flea and tick preventative like Front line or Vectra. Also make sure your pets are up to date on all their vaccinations, and bring CSSP an updated copy for our records.

DOG WASH FUNDRAISER!

Why?
We wash your pooch for a donation funding Ayanna’s tuition and air fare to The Jr. National Young Leaders Conference in D.C. Ayanna was chosen by her teacher to represent her school and attend the JrNYLC for exemplary grades, leadership potential, and maturity.

STU’Z IN THE NEW’Z!

Stu pulling for dog weight pulling competition

Stu, digging in for a solid pull

We’d like to acknowledge a HUGE accomplishment by Todd’s very own, Stu. She is now officially in the 1 ton club!! You’re probably all scratching your heads wondering what that means, let me give you a brief explanation.

Stu is involved in the world of competitive weight pulling. Each dog is in a “class” based on their weight and experience. The dog is hitched to the cart with a special harness that distributes the weight evenly to minimize any risk of injury. The handler stands at the finish line and gives verbal commands to their dog, to start pulling. The dog must pull the weighted cart 16 feet in 60 seconds or less, to move on to the next round, and each round the weight is increased.

Now, if you’re in disbelief after my explanation of what it means to be in the 1 ton club, let me  break it down for you. Stu is a 58lb Pit Bull, and competitively pulled 2,135 lbs!! That is 36 times her body weight!!
Way to go Stu!! Girls rock!!

ABE’S ADVICE

Abe, the American Bulldog's, Advice Corner

Abe, the American Bulldog

Ahh, the taboo topic of doggie poop eating, or in scientific terms, coprophagia.  This is one problem people often have difficulty asking for help with as if is something to be ashamed of, when in fact it is more common than most know.

Although not that uncommon, it is a behavior that should not be tolerated.  Coprophagia can pose a variety of health risks to you and your pet including but not limited to Giardia, tapeworms, hookworms and roundworms.

A change in diet or food additives can sometimes be effective in stopping a dog from eating it’s own stool, but usually will not prevent them from eating the stool of another dog or animal.

I have found the best approach to fix this problem is to create undesirable consequence if my dog even approaches a pile of feces coupled with a solid management plan of strict supervision.

Also if you have one of those hard-core potty mouths, please do yourself and your dog the favor of avoiding the dog parks. Please feel free to contact us at Come, Sit, Stay & Play to help your pooch clean up his or act.

BARK BACK! – Stories from our clients

Pretty Girl a rescued Collie

Pretty Girl - social butterfly!

Pretty Girl is a rescued collie. She lives here in Milwaukee with her dad Robert, and her fur brother Sonny. Once a shy girl, she has now blossomed into a  social butterfly!

Pretty Girl and her family went on a trip to St. Paul Minnesota, and were staying several miles away from where she used to live. While visiting her old stomping ground, the family went for a walk on a Friday morning. Enjoying a leashed walk through the park, the family had no idea that a car pulled up, and let an unleashed dog out. The dog immediately charged the family, and ended up attacking Pretty Girl. Robert did what he could to help her, but in the mess, Pretty Girl got away from not only the dog, but her dad as well.

Scared and confused by the sudden attack, she ran away towards a busy street. Robert took off after her, but she was already blocks ahead of him when she disappeared. They looked and called for Pretty Girl but had no luck. Robert was distraught, not knowing what to do next. How would he find her? They were in a different state, miles away from anything that she was familiar with.

Thank goodness Pretty girl isn’t just another pretty face, she has brains to! Her instincts kicked in, and she walked miles, crossing many busy streets, and managed to find her way back to her former condo complex! She snuck into an old neighbor’s yard and waited there until the neighbor found and recognized her! On Saturday around 8pm, a day and a half after she disappeared, Robert got the call that Pretty Girl was safe and sound!

Pretty Girl’s drive and determination to be reunited with her family, helped guide her to a familiar place. We’re so thankful for this happy ending! We love you Pretty Girl!
